Why being cited is now a credibility issue for South African small business.
An S40 Works point of view on where trust is won — and lost — in a mobile, word-of-mouth market.

Our view, in one line
In South Africa, trust is what closes the sale — and being quoted by AI is fast becoming the new front door to that trust. For a plumber, electrician or restaurant, not appearing in the AI shortlist can mean losing the job or booking before the phone rings.
South Africans buy on trust — the numbers say so
This is not a hunch. Around 75.5% of South Africans say they trust online reviews when deciding who to buy from (South Africa). An Eat Out and Yoco survey of nearly 1,500 diners found a personal recommendation is the number-one influence for 80% of customers trying somewhere new, with online reviews the second-biggest influence (South Africa).
The South African customer’s decision has always run on reputation. What has changed is where that reputation gets read first — increasingly, by an AI before it is read by a human.
Why this hits trades and restaurants hardest
Trades. You are asking a stranger to let someone into their home, often in an emergency. People do not simply want the cheapest; they want someone they can trust to turn up and do the work properly. They ask around — and now they ask their phone.
Restaurants. A night out is money and time people do not want to waste. In South Africa, food quality (95%), affordability (71%), location (69%) and service (66%) drive the choice — and diners increasingly check those factors online before booking.
Both decisions are made quickly and on mobile: about 92% of South African internet traffic is on a phone. When a customer asks “best plumber in Melkbosstrand” or “good restaurant near me”, an AI may compose the shortlist. Businesses with clear, consistent, well-reviewed information are more likely to be represented in that moment.
The real cost: the lost opportunity you never see
A missed AI mention is not merely a phone call you lost — it is a phone call that never happened. You do not see it, so you do not count it. But the opportunity can go to a competitor who looked more trustworthy to a machine.
For South African small businesses, where every marketing rand has to work, paying for a website that AI cannot read or trust is a double loss: you spend the money and remain invisible where part of the decision is being made.
The S40 Works position
Credibility is not a slogan on your homepage. It is a set of controllable signals — real reviews, a named owner, honest specifics, consistent contact details and genuine photos. Get them right and you are not just “online”; you are quotable.
This is not only for trades and restaurants
We lead with plumbers, electricians and restaurants because the trust-under-pressure pattern is clearest there. The same logic applies to local, service-based, owner-run businesses South Africans choose on reputation — dentists, hair salons, guest houses, attorneys, physios and mechanics. If customers ask around before buying, they may also ask AI.
The window is open — for now
Most small businesses have not reacted to this shift yet. That creates an opportunity for owners who make their credibility readable now.
Our take: in South Africa, citation is becoming a new form of word of mouth. Businesses that treat online credibility as seriously as workmanship will be better placed to capture local demand — which is what Get Chosen is designed to build.
Frequently asked questions
Yes — and that is exactly the point. AI citation is word of mouth at scale. When someone cannot ask a friend, they ask their phone, and the AI answer increasingly plays that recommendation role.
Reviews are a major asset, but AI can only connect them confidently to a business if the surrounding information is consistent and the site is readable. Differences in your name, address or phone across platforms create avoidable doubt.
